He hears her pain and immediately knows it for what it is, because it sounds just like his. His eyes widen a fraction as he stares at her. ]

Zoe.

[ He won't ask. He can't. Not when he's been utterly incapable of talking about it himself. ]

[She stiffens slightly, waiting for the 'I'm sorry', the condolences that have so often been empty words... Though somehow she gets the sense that they wouldn't be, here. Not from him.

When he trails off and doesn't finish the thought, she looks back towards him, her expression a little bit miserable - but there's a resilience to it all the same. That's cemented when she says, in a voice that she has to fight to keep from cracking slightly:]

Yeah. I know we will. I just wish... All of this was different.
